Artist Statement
I am intrigued by small things that make up a larger whole - tiles in a mosaic, pieces in a puzzle, bits of paper in a collage, clues that solve a mystery. Somehow they connect, and it’s not until we step back a bit that the greater pattern or picture is revealed.
My collage work is influenced by the concept that everything and everyone is connected and what one does affects all the others. Recurring elements include bold color and texture, deconstructed shapes, text fragments, and rhythmic circles and dots. Each individual element has its own specific role to play in the larger creation.
The found object assemblages came about from a need for playfulness as well as an affinity for repurposing. Using reclaimed wood surfaces and discarded household objects, I fashioned lighthearted and fun tributes. The individual items were culled from rusty objects found in parking lots and by the side of the road, as well as a large collection of outdated kitchen implements and pieces from incomplete games. Giving new life to objects largely destined for a landfill speaks to me of redemption.
